Zaire: “Silk Road actually came about organically. I spent Christmas in London for the first time since I was like maybe 13 or 14. I usually spend the Summers so this was new and the energy was different. I came back with so much music to show my friends and the team I didn’t plan on making or recording anything new but life doesn’t work that way. I had heard the initial beat and tried to take it in a completely different direction because the whole E.P. I had just finished was about love, but I realized I had to get out of the way because the song was writing itself in my head. I didn't write any of it down which is only something I’ve started doing recently. I’ve been trying to learn how to write music in my head and feel it out rather than thinking it out. I recorded the first verse and the chorus, got to the breakdown left the record button on and started prepping myself to craft the waviest verse I could come up with and I thought to myself hmmm what could set the mood even more…”incense” so I actually stopped recording right there went down the street and got incense as the song says haha. I think it was at that point I knew where the song was going...
The video?
Zaire: “I had 5 days left of my stay in London before I had to shoot back to D.C. the song was done and we were already onto the next thing but I woke up one morning and the whole video concept hit me. It wasn’t quite a reality yet though I hadn’t fully convinced myself it was possible but I was curious. We had 5 days, had to figure out a budget and there were all these missing pieces. So I did what I do with any idea I took it to my right hand BB. He put the battery in my back and before we knew it we were on Ealing road at the fabric store trying to differentiate between satin, velvet or ‘silk’. Had to put an OG call into a good friend of the families Lucas Mendes at the park and make sure we could squeeze in the hours. Rounded up the cast and boom we were rolling.
I made it a point to add the cast and everyone who was involved at the end because it really took a village to bring this idea to life. Everyone put their creative input in and made it surpass anything I could have imagined in its inception when it was just an idea. I had so many talented beautiful women behind me really pulling the strings. If you want to build an incredible team build it around women! Honestly when you look back at any movement in history that was successful women were at the core, prime example the black panther party. Huey, Bobby and those guys were great don’t get me wrong but Afeni, Angela Davis and all the women who made those 10 point programs a reality every day at the core were the true heroes in my eyes because it started and ended with them!
